چکیده

As the target earthquake we have taken a huge earthquake (EQ) named Miyagi-oki earthquake on 16 August 2005 (with magnitude of 7.2) and we have analyzed the 4 month period including the date of this EQ. In addition to our previous analysis on the nighttime average amplitude (trend) and nighttime fluctuation, we have proposed the use of fluctuation power spectra in the frequency rage of atmospheric gravity waves (period=10 min to 100 min) as a third parameter of subionospheric VLF/LF propagation characteristics. Then it is found that this third parameter would be of additional importance in confirming the presence of seismoionospheric perturbations. Finally, we have discovered an important role of lunar tidal effect in the VLF/LF data, which appears one and two months before this large EQ.

VLF/LF Radio Sounding of Ionospheric Perturbations Associated with Earthquakes

It is recently recognized that the ionosphere is very sensitive to seismic effects, and the detection of ionospheric perturbations associated with earthquakes, seems to be very promising for short-term earthquake prediction. We have proposed a possible use of VLF/LF (very low frequency (3-30 kHz) /low frequency (30-300 kHz)) radio sounding of the seismo-ionospheric perturbations. A brief histor...

Very low frequency subionospheric remote sensing of thunderstormdriven acoustic waves in the lower ionosphere

We present observations of narrowband subionospheric VLF transmitter signals on 20 March 2001, exhibiting coherent fluctuations of over 1 dB peak to peak. Spectral analysis shows that the fluctuations have periods of 1–4min and are largely coherent. The subionospheric propagation path of the signal from Puerto Rico to Colorado passes over two regions of convective and lightning activity, as obs...

On the generation mechanism of terminator times in subionospheric VLF/LF propagation and its possible application to seismogenic effects

The signals from VLF/LF transmitters are known to propagate in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide, so that the subionospheric propagation characteristics are very sensitive to the condition of the lower ionosphere. We know that there appear the terminator times just around the sunrise and sunset in the diurnal variation of subionospheric VLF/LF signal (amplitude and phase). These terminator times a...

Detection and Modeling of Medium-Scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances in Iran Region

Ionosphere layer variations are divided into regular and irregular. Regular changes can be considered as daily changes, changes depending on latitude and changes due to solar activity. Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (TID) is one of the irregular changes of ionosphere which categorized in small, medium and large scales. Medium-scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbance (MSTID) which are propa...

Subionospheric VLF measurements of the effects of geomagnetic storms on the mid-latitude D-region

We examine the effects on the mid-latitude D-region of two geomagnetic storms, the "Halloween storm" of late October 2003 and the 07 April 2000 storm, by means of the associated perturbations of several subionospheric VLF/LF signals propagating in both the northern and southern hemispheres. We use VLF/LF nighttime data from the Holographic Array for Ionospheric/Lightning Research (HAIL), locate...
